A dark academia room needs books, and the books need to look used. Mix spines: clothbound, faded paperbacks, a few with torn jackets. Stack some flat, stand some up. Leave room on the shelves so it looks like a working library, not a display.

One piece of old leather

Where to find the pieces without spending a fortune
Dark academia is one of the few styles that gets better when you buy secondhand. Thrift stores and estate sales are full of what it needs: brass lamps, leather chairs, old books by the box, oil paintings in heavy frames.
- Books: library sales, usually $1 a bag. Look for cloth covers without jackets.
- Brass lamps: thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace, $15 to $40. Rewire if the cord is cloth and cracked.
- Leather chair: the most expensive piece. A used club chair runs $150 to $400. Check the frame is solid; worn leather is a plus.
- Art: thrifted landscapes and portraits in gilt frames, $10 to $50. The darker and more varnished, the better.
- Paneling: new MDF strips from any hardware store. This part is better new.
Making it work in a rental
You can't panel a rental wall, but you can get close. Lean large framed art against the wall on a dresser instead of hanging it. Use a freestanding bookcase painted dark brown. Bring in the leather, the lamps and the rug, which all move with you. Many landlords will also let you paint if you agree to repaint before you leave; ask.
