Two changes do almost all the work in a small bathroom:
- Lift the vanity off the floor so you can see the tile underneath.
- Hang the biggest mirror the wall will take.

The big mirror
In a small bathroom, go bigger than feels right. A frameless mirror covering most of the wall above the vanity, from counter to near the ceiling, doubles the light and the space. Or a large mirror spanning the full vanity width.
Glass shower screen
Swap a shower curtain for a single fixed glass panel if you can. It lets you see through to the back wall and makes the room look bigger.
A patterned floor
When the floor shows under the vanity, it becomes a feature. Terracotta, patterned cement or a small hex looks great running continuously under a floating vanity.
Wall tile
Cream zellige or a light tile on the walls keeps the room bright. Take it up to the ceiling behind the vanity for extra height.
Lighting a small bathroom
A single ceiling light in a small bathroom creates harsh shadows on your face. With a big mirror, add a sconce on each side of it at about face height, or a slim light bar above. Warm white, 2700K to 3000K. The mirror doubles the light, so you often need less wattage than you'd think.
An LED-backlit mirror is another option. The light glows from behind the mirror's edge and gives soft, even light with no separate fixtures, which helps in very tight rooms.
Color in a small bathroom
Light colors are the default, but a small bathroom can take color if the floor and mirror are doing their job. A floating vanity in walnut or deep green adds warmth without closing the room in, because the floor still shows beneath it. Keep walls and ceiling light, and let the vanity and floor carry the color.
Installation notes
- Floating vanities need solid wall support. Mount into studs or add blocking in the wall before tiling.
